Austinites focus charity local over Mexico due to swine flu and recent violence

Contributed by ATR Admin on June 14, 2009
Traditionally many churches in Austin send teams of volunteers over the border to Mexico to help with building projects. This year, due to the escalation of drug-related violence on or near the border, numbers are down by more than half.

Reports of swine flu are also deterring volunteers from traveling, but there is a silver lining to this bad news. Volunteers are now looking for projects closer to home including helping rebuild Houston and Galveston after Hurricane Ike.
